My husband and I ventured on a fall trip that took us up the east coast of the United States and into the maritime provinces of Canada. We had a general idea of where we wanted to go but no specific time frame or route. Our journey began in Pennsylvania on September 24th, my birthday and ended when we returned home on October 29, 2025. We drove through Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Maine. We took a ferry from Bar Harbor, Maine to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. We traveled through Nova Scotia and took another ferry, which was eight hours long at night, to Newfoundland and Labrador. We drove to St. John’s which is the most eastern point in that province. We took the return ferry back to Nova Scotia during the day and took the ferry to Prince Edward Island. We then traveled back through Brunswick Canada back to Maine and then home. We drove over 5000 miles on our adventure
We attended church the five sabbaths we were away. We met many new friends. One couple invited us to stay with them and we stayed two nights and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Our trip included a visit to the hospital for blood work as well as a visit to an emergency urgent care for kidney stones.
Canada is a beautiful country. It is really clean! The bathrooms were especially clean. They clean them every 15 minutes. In Canada you don’t touch door handles. They are electronic doors which only requires a wave of your hand over the opener. People are very friendly and helpful. The American dollar goes along way. The dollar is valued at 40% more. Canada is on the metric system so we had to learn the units. Speed is measured in KLMs. We never did figure out the gas while in Canada. Prices are per liter and are controlled by the government but prices vary somewhat depending on the province. The Trans Canadian highway, which is the only highway through Canada, has no rest areas or scenic pullovers like you find in the US. What a shame because the landscape is beautiful.
The fall foliage was beautiful! The farther north we drove the prettier the leaves. The colors were outstanding especially the white birches with yellow leaves. This is the first of several blogs documenting our adventure.
New England didn’t have a lot of color. It improved the farther north we went.
