Exploring Castle Dome: Arizona’s Historic Ghost Town Museum
I wanted to visit a “ghost town” while I was in Arizona. Castle Dome Mining Museum is located in the Kofa National Wildlife Preserve in Yuma County, Arizona. It is the nearest “ghost town” to my location.

The area was home to the town and mining camp of Castle Dome. It was based around the Castle Dome Mine. This mine first produced silver and later lead. The post office opened in 1875 and closed in 1876. Castle Dome ghost town is now a museum site. It offers an authentic look back in time. This is achieved with the preservation and restoration of Castle Dome City. Sitting on a patented mine since 1871, Castle Dome is the longest worked mining district in Arizona. The museum houses artifacts dug up from over 300 mines within the Castle Dome District. Each artifact tells a story about the mine’s history. They also reveal details of the 3000 residents of Castle Dome.
You’ll find silver extraction reached 498,000 troy ounces (15.5 metric tons), while lead production totaled 10,697 short tons (9,704 metric tons). Lead became the district’s primary commodity despite silver driving early interest. The town operated with a sense of typical lawlessness characteristic of frontier mining settlements.

This color change occurs when old glass items have been exposed to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation for extended periods, sometimes decades. The mystery behind why some clear glass turns purple lies entirely in a specific chemical ingredient used in the glass making process. The resulting “sun-colored” glass, often called “desert glass,” is a visible record of a prolonged chemical reaction driven by the energy of the sun.Artifacts and debris are scattered on the ground in Castle Dome Mining Museum.
